Holger Bech Nielsen (born 25 August 1941) is a Danish theoretical physicist and professor emeritus at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where he has been based since 1961. Working independently of Nambu and Susskind, he was among the first to propose that the Veneziano model describes vibrating strings, making him one of the founding figures of string theory. Several concepts in high-energy physics carry his name - among them the Nielsen-Olesen vortex and the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem - and he received the Humboldt Prize in 2001. Beyond research, he is a prolific science communicator, known for public lectures and popular books co-written with Jonas Kuld Rathje.
