Horse Lords
Experimental American band Horse Lords performs at PHONO in Aarhus.
Horse Lords are an experimental rock quartet from Baltimore, active since 2010, who build their sound around just intonation - guitarist Owen Gardner hand-modifies the band's instruments to achieve the tuning system associated with La Monte Young and Harry Partch. Their dense, polyrhythmic compositions draw on krautrock, Afrobeat and Appalachian folk, and the band has released a string of critically acclaimed records on RVNG Intl. Three of the four members now live in Germany, though the group continues to tour relentlessly across Europe and North America.
Horse Lords released the album Demand to Be Taken to Heaven Alive! on June 12, 2026 via RVNG Intl. - the band's first studio album in four years and first with vocals.
On the new album, singers Nina Guo and Evelyn Saylor perform, as well as guest musicians on bass clarinet and trombone - an expansion of the band's previously purely instrumental format.
Horse Lords began a European tour in May 2026 with concerts in Belgium, Italy and Norway, before continuing to North America.
New Music Circle described the band as now partly Berlin-based and highlighted their ability to deliver an engaging live experience in both DIY venues and formal concert halls.
In March 2024, Horse Lords released the live album As It Happened: Horse Lords Live, recorded during a series of European tours in 2022 and 2023.
