Ian Bousfield is a British trombonist born in York in 1964, who served as principal trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic from 2000 to 2012 - the first and, to date, only British member in the orchestra's history. Before Vienna he held the same chair at the London Symphony Orchestra for twelve years. He now works as a soloist, conductor and professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and the Royal Academy of Music in London, and has conducted ensembles including the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Copenhagen Opera.
Bousfield was in 2023 a jury member at the 17th International Aeolus Competition for wind instruments in Düsseldorf and gave an interview in March 2024 about his experiences there.
Bousfield's book and video series 'Unlocking the Trombone Code', published by Warwick Music, has received great recognition in professional circles.
In June 2019, Bousfield was chairman of the first Tchaikovsky Competition for wind players ever, at the invitation of Valery Gergiev.
Bousfield received in 2012 the ITA Award - a lifetime honor from the International Trombone Association.
