Most people - academics and journalists alike - understand Christianity and religion as a matter of believing in God or gods. But does that understanding really hold up?

Professor Anders Klostergaard Petersen from Aarhus University argues in this lecture that Christianity and religion are far more complex than that, with roots stretching back to humanity's distant evolutionary past. If religion were merely about "believing" in something - the way we accept gravity as true - we would hardly have religion today. Yet the majority of Danes are members of the state church, even when they may not believe in it. Why?

The answer requires a detour: back to human early history, forward through early Christianity and the Reformation, and on to the Danish state church. The lecture thus illuminates not only the historical development of Christianity, but also the connection between culture, society, and religion - in the past and in the present.
