Architect John Holmer tells the story of the old Storstrøm Bridge - one of the era's greatest engineering projects and a crucial link connecting Zealand, Falster, and the rest of Europe.

The lecture begins with the historical background for the bridge's creation: the Fugleflugtslinjen route between Copenhagen and Hamburg, the bridge's development, and the many years of planning before construction. It then covers the actual construction from 1933 to 1937 - the foundations, the characteristic steel arches, bridge spans and pillars, including the apartments built into the pillars. The lecture also addresses the Masnedsund Bridge, the new rail and road facilities, the bridge's role during World War II, its later deterioration, and the modern structures that today continue the connection across Storstrømmen.

John Holmer has spent years communicating Danish cultural history and serves as chairman of the Museum Association of South Zealand and Møn, where he has given lectures on the region's history, infrastructure, and technical heritage.
