Dogs and Humans

Dogs have followed humans for over 30,000 years, taking on many roles - from providing warmth on cold winter nights and controlling pests to serving as hunting dogs, guard dogs, draft animals, status symbols, and therapy animals. Yet their most everyday role is perhaps the most important: being a natural part of the family.

The dog's ancestor is the wolf, but the dog has found its own niche close to us. Through selective breeding, we have emphasized the traits we needed, and over the last 150 years appearance has become increasingly important - with some rather extreme characteristics as a result. Dogs no longer resemble wolves and are adapted to life close to humans, but they still have dog needs that must be met.

The better we understand what dogs actually are and what it takes to give them a good life, the better things go - especially for the dogs themselves.
