Morning Lecture: The History of Danish Coffee

Historian and museum curator Annette Hoff presents a lecture on Danes' relationship with coffee - from its first mention in 1665 to the present day. She traces coffee through everyday life over the centuries: from the absolute luxury of the 1600s to today's daily consumption, and addresses questions such as why Denmark became a nation of coffee drinkers despite tea being the most popular beverage in the 1700s.

The lecture is based on Hoff's book "The Danish Coffee History", part of the book series "A History of Pleasures in Denmark", published by Den Gamle By in Aarhus in 2015-18. She presents the material herself and shows many images from the book featuring coffee equipment, living rooms, kitchens, coffee roasteries, coffee merchants, and cafes.

There will be a coffee break during the lecture, and as always at the Morning Lectures, cake is served. You are welcome to bring your favourite cup.
