The Huge Reading Day - Storytelling: H.C. Andersen's Lesser-Known Tales

The Huge Reading Day is celebrated at Biblioteket Sønderborg with storytelling by Ellen Mortensen. She focuses on H. C. Andersen's lesser-known fairy tales - the ones that have slipped into oblivion while The Tinderbox and The Ugly Duckling have captured all the attention.

Mortensen has unearthed these forgotten stories, dusted them off, and added drama with an ear for the poetic language that characterizes H. C. Andersen. She works in the oral storytelling tradition, where stories are shaped in the encounter with the audience rather than simply being read aloud - which means the stories never sound quite the same twice, and the audience is an active part of the narrative.
