Two major orchestral works frame the season opening at Alsion: Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2 with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist and Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 conducted by Christian Øland. The orchestra opens with Niels W. Gade's overture "In the Highlands", giving the evening a Nordic character before the intermission.

Tetzlaff is one of the most prominent violinists of his generation. He rose to prominence in the 1990s with performances at the Cleveland Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, and Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. In 2018 he won a Gramophone Award for his recording of Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2 - recorded with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hannu Lintu.

Koncertsalen Alsion in Sønderborg is the main concert hall for the whole of Southern Jutland, with seating for up to 988 guests. The programme ranges from classical music and opera to stand-up, comedy and lectures, with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester as a regular resident ensemble. The hall is constructed as two concrete shells, one inside the other, keeping outside noise at bay and giving it acoustics that performers consistently praise. The 20-metre-wide stage can be adjusted hydraulically to depths of 6, 9 or 12 metres.

About: Christian Tetzlaff

Christian Tetzlaff is a German violinist, born in 1966, who rose to international prominence in the 1990s performing with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Cleveland Orchestra. He is widely regarded as one of the outstanding soloists of his generation. In 2018 he won a Gramophone Award for his recording of Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2.
