Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2

Few works in the piano repertoire make such demanding physical and mental demands as Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2. The soloist is Vadym Kholodenko from Ukraine, who won the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2013 and has since received numerous awards for his recordings.

The second half features Stravinsky's The Fairy's Kiss, a ballet score about a fairy who falls in love with a human. The music shifts between almost mechanical clarity and sudden lyrical openings, with sharp rhythms and transparent orchestration.

The podium is led by Iranian conductor Hossein Pishkar, who works across opera and orchestra and has conducted Verdi's Aida at the Copenhagen Opera House.
