Bach's St. Matthew Passion

Bach's St. Matthew Passion traces Christ's passion from the Last Supper to the crucifixion through magnificent choral movements, intimate arias, recitatives, and chorales - each element commenting on the events with theological depth and dramatic power.

For this concert, we collaborate with the NDR Vocal Ensemble, who also provide soloists. Conductor Henrik Schaefer, who studied in Leipzig and has conducted at the Thomaskirche, where Bach was cantor, says of the work: "I seek the human element in Bach's music. The St. Matthew Passion is deeply sorrowful, but it is really about human salvation."
