The Church Chapter in Ulysses

The "Circe" chapter from Ulysses is regarded as one of the most radically written texts in world literature. Joyce himself believed that only a thin line separated it from madness.

The chapter is structured as a drama and leads the reader into the hallucinatory world of Dublin Nighttown, where the hidden fantasies, guilt, and fears of the main characters unfold in a modern inferno of sexuality, religion, and power. "Circe" portrays an Ireland caught between Catholic morality, colonial history, and the longing for liberation.

The lecture examines how Joyce uses grotesque humour, symbolism, and theatrical form to challenge the boundaries between art, identity, and consciousness. The speaker is Benjamin Boysen, M.A., Ph.D. and Dr.Phil. in literary studies from the University of Southern Denmark.
