Japanese Shomyo Chant Workshop with Junko Ueda
This workshop introduces Shomyo, a Japanese Buddhist chant originating from the 9th century. Under the guidance of Junko Ueda, participants will learn to sing Shomyo while practicing breathing and body exercises. No musical knowledge is required.
The workshop aims to develop concentration, breathing control, and awareness of the body's energy centre (Hara/Seika-Tanden). Through slow, meditative chanting, you will explore this 1200-year-old tradition and discover the wisdom and power of the breath. The session includes warming-up exercises, introduction to various Shomyo melody patterns, and practice of traditional pieces such as 'Sange' and 'Taiyo'.
Junko Ueda has been teaching Shomyo workshops since 1995, promoting these ancient melodies as part of a global sustainability approach centred on conscious breathing.
