Lecture: Sicily - The Triangular Island and Its Historical Potential

A lecture by Cecilie Marie Meyer on Sicily's history and present day.

"If you have seen Italy without seeing Sicily, you have seen nothing at all. Sicily is the key to everything," Goethe wrote about the triangular island. Taking this as a starting point, the lecture takes you chronologically through the island's thousand-year history - from the first tribes through the Greeks, Romans and Arabs to the Normans, Spanish rule and incorporation into the modern Italian republic.

Along the way, the lecture also focuses on the mafia's role as a parallel state: its past, present and future in Sicily. The lecture concludes with a look at the island's modern potential and the answers it may hold to the challenges facing global society.

The event is part of The Sicilian Days in Copenhagen with the Folk High School in Sicily.
