Wine & Science: Understanding Animals

Two behavioural researchers explore the hidden world of animal communication and social behaviour. Jakob Bro-Jørgensen, behavioural ecologist from University of Liverpool with over 25 years of field experience studying antelopes on East African savannas, presents research on the topi antelope from Kenya's famous Masai Mara reserve. His work on reproductive strategies and sex roles has revealed behaviour that challenges Darwin's classical ideas about passive females and active males.

Elodie F. Mandel-Briefer, behavioural biologist and head of the behavioural ecology research group at Copenhagen University, shares her two decades of research into animal vocalisations - from pigs, goats and horses to zebras, meerkats and larks. She demonstrates how advanced AI technology can decode animal "language" to improve animal welfare and nature conservation. Her work was featured in the 2024 DR documentary "If Pigs Could Talk".
