Writing Workshop: On Writing Essays with Amalie Langballe — Kvarterhuset, Copenhagen

An essay means "an attempt" - and anyone can write one. In this workshop, we explore the genre that sits at the intersection of fiction and non-fiction. Using exemplary texts, we investigate together what makes an essay work: How do you create a linguistic momentum? What role should the "I" play - or not play? And how do you write in dialogue with other texts?

The workshop consists of a lecture followed by several writing exercises. It is led by Amalie Langballe, an author and journalist who uses her personal history in columns, opinion pieces, and novels to explore sexuality, power, desire, and relationships. She debuted in 2019 with the grief novel "forsvindingsnumre", followed by "elskende" (2025), set in a medieval brothel, and the essay collection "Nye dyder" (2026) featuring conversations with the Bible.

The workshop takes place in Glassalen at Kvarterhuset from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Participation is free but requires registration on Billetto. Seating is very limited, so please bring pen and paper rather than a laptop - computers are not provided. Questions can be sent to literature coordinator Jakob at uk1q@kk.dk.
