Peter Madsen (born 12 May 1958 in Aarhus) is a Danish cartoonist, illustrator and author, best known for the Valhalla comics - a 15-album series about the Norse gods, drawn from 1979 to 2009 with Henning Kure and Hans Rancke-Madsen. The series is Denmark's best-selling comic and was adapted into a 1986 animated film that Madsen co-directed. Since the 1990s he has also built a parallel body of work retelling biblical stories, including Menneskesønnen and Urhistorien, and since 2010 he has co-created the Troldeliv picture-book series with his wife Sissel Bøe.
Peter Madsen participates in a literary event at Kulturstationen Vanløse about Viking Age techniques in modern storytelling, together with Anne-Marie Vedsø Olesen and historian Jeanette Varberg.
Peter Madsen was a guest at Copenhagen Comics 2024 in Øksnehallen, where he held a drawing workshop for children based on the Troldeliv universe.
Comicgarden in Copenhagen showed the exhibition COVER SKETCHES with all 15 Valhalla cover sketches from May 2 to June 15, 2024, accompanied by new signed giclée prints.
Skovgaard Museum in Viborg showed the first major museum exhibition with Peter Madsen's work - over 150 sketches and panels under the title 'Peter Madsen's Immortal Stories' (January 27 - April 30, 2023).
Peter Madsen received the State Art Foundation's lifetime honorary award for his many years of significance to Danish comic culture.
