Richard Andersson (b. 4 October 1982, Daugård, Denmark) is a Danish/Faroese/Icelandic double bassist and composer based in Copenhagen. He lost his sight at 14 in a fireworks accident and found his way into jazz through Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. Trained at the Carl Nielsen Academy, Manhattan School of Music and the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen, he has released more than ten albums as a bandleader on his own Hobby Horse Records label - working with musicians including Jorge Rossy, Oskar Gudjonsson and Jeff 'Tain' Watts - and is described by Gaffa as 'one of the most interesting characters of the Danish jazz scene'.
Richard Andersson released the album Monk & More (Hobby Horse Records) with Rudi Mahall, Artur Tuznik and Kasper Tom - an interpretation of Thelonious Monk and related composers, recorded in Copenhagen in July 2024.
Jazz Journal reviewed Monk & More and described Andersson as 'a central figure on the Nordic jazz scene renowned for his wide-ranging artistic output and cross-border collaborations'.
Andersson participated in the debut album Bringer of Light from the quartet project Omrum (with Erik Kimestad, Mads Hyhne and Jakob Høyer), released 13 November 2025 on Hobby Horse Records.
Andersson was nominated for Composer of the Year at Danish Music Awards Jazz 2023 for the album UNDO with Richard Andersson NOR feat. Hilmar Jensson.
Andersson was nominated in the categories Experimental Release of the Year and Cross-Aesthetic Release of the Year at Danish Music Awards Jazz 2022 for the solo project U-Synlig.
