Cuban Culture and Cultural Life

Cuban Culture lecture with Henrik Thejl Hansen: Thursday 22 October 2026, 17:30–19:15, Alsion, Sønderborg. Tickets cost 100 kr.

Sønderborg Folkeuniversitet presents a lecture on Cuban culture and cultural life by Henrik Thejl Hansen.

Cuba, like the rest of the Americas, has been shaped by the interplay of European, African, and Asian cultures, which have influenced the country's cultural development in various ways. With decolonization, the founding of the UN, and the universalization of human rights, national consciousness grew in former colonies. The revolution gave culture a central role in Cuba - with far-reaching significance well beyond the country's borders.

Today, a new cognitive battleground has emerged over the understanding of the world - and of the Cuban revolution - driven by the internet and social media. These are among the themes the lecture explores in depth.

Henrik Thejl Hansen is trained as a primary school teacher and holds a master's degree in Spanish and social studies. Over the past 26 years, he has spent six to eight months a year in Cuba, where he works as a tour guide and interpreter.

The lecture takes place in room U 106, Alsion.
