For five generations, the Hage family has owned Oremandsgaard, just south of Præstø. The estate's lands were converted to organic farming in the 1960s, the Danish Nature Conservation Society was founded here, and the property hosted a chamber music festival. In 2013, a young August Hage inherited it all - along with a debt of 70 million kroner. Today Oremandsgaard houses a gin distillery and smaller creative businesses, and recently served as the filming location for DR Drama's new series "Høst", which premiered on DR1 in October.

The family's history stretches far back: the Hages were involved in the struggle for Denmark's first Constitution in 1849, served in the Folketing and Landsting, and helped establish the rule of law and the creation of the Maritime and Commercial Court. Eva Damsgård spent three years writing the book "Slægten Hage" (The Hage Family). Her research took her to the National Archives and through stacks of letters and notes in Gothic script. The book follows the Hages' lives and fates from the 1700s to today and describes their dealings with figures such as C.F. Tietgen, Bertel Thorvaldsen, and Orla Lehmann.
