Forbidden Books from the Enlightenment to Today — Biblioteket Sønderborg, Sønderborg

The Secret Society for History gathers at Sønderborg Library for a discussion about historical topics. This autumn's programme features three events - this one focuses on forbidden books from the Enlightenment to the present day.

Researcher Dennis Meyhoff Brink discusses why churches and states have banned books throughout the centuries, and how authors and readers have circumvented censorship. He pays particular attention to authorities' fear of erotic and satirical books - and how they nonetheless became banned bestsellers. Dennis Meyhoff Brink is a satire researcher, writer and lecturer who has studied the history of European religious satire and satirical responses to censorship at the University of Copenhagen.

The presentation lasts approximately 30 minutes and is broadcast live from somewhere in Denmark, after which the group discusses the topic. No preparation is necessary, but participants can receive suggestions for articles and literature for those who wish to explore further.

The event takes place in Indsigten, level 2, Nørre Havnegade 15, 6400 Sønderborg.
