Bergithe Johannessen - Lecture on a Faroese Icon — Bibliotekshuset, Copenhagen

Bergithe Johannessen (1905-1995) broke new ground in Faroese art history: at 17, she enrolled at Sidcup School of Art in London, and in 1925 became the first Faroese person ever admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. She left behind several hundred works, predominantly watercolours depicting Faroese landscapes.

Anya Mathilde Poulsen and Gunvor Bjerre have written the book "Bergithe Johannessen - a Pioneer in Faroese Art" about a woman who chose art as her life's work at a time when it was rarely considered a profession for women. In this lecture, the two authors present her life and work.

The lecture is part of the Amager Literature Festival and is supported by Amager Vest Local Committee and Amager Øst Local Committee.
