DUNKEL - Den Sorte Skole & Vertigo REFRAKTO
Den Sorte Skole and Vertigo REFRAKTO join forces for DUNKEL, a collaborative performance at Musikhuset Esbjerg.
Den Sorte Skole is a Copenhagen-based DJ and composer duo - Martin Højland and Simon Dokkedal - who since 2004 have built sprawling sound collages from samples drawn across continents and centuries, blending hip-hop, electronic music and world music traditions into what critics have called "sample symphonies". They have performed on Roskilde Festival's Orange Stage, collaborated with the Copenhagen Philharmonic and the Royal Theatre, and received the Crown Prince Couples Cultural Award in 2017. Their 2025 album "Ghosts & Robots" marked their return after an eight-year gap between studio releases.
Den Sorte Skole released the album "Ghosts & Robots" on March 30, 2025 - their first studio album in eight years, built from their own synthesizer recordings, vinyl samples from around the world and material co-composed with Karsten Fundal.
In connection with the album release, Den Sorte Skole presented a documentary film by Simon Weyhe about the duo exclusively at the film festival CPH:DOX with a live audiovisual performance at Bremen Teater.
Dagbladet Information reviewed "Ghosts & Robots" and described the album as grandiosely conceived - even by Den Sorte Skole's always high ambition level.
Den Sorte Skole performed at ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art in Ishøj on January 8, 2025.
Den Sorte Skole and Karsten Fundal were nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2020 for "Symphony No. II for Sampler and Chamber Orchestra" (2016).
