Mahler's 4th Symphony

About

Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in G major (1900) is the most intimate and chamber-like of his nine completed symphonies, built around the 1892 song "Das himmlische Leben" - a child's vision of heaven sung by a solo soprano in the finale. Compared to its predecessors, the work is lightly scored, with no trombones or tuba, and its classical four-movement structure ties it closely to the Viennese tradition. Musicologist Donald Mitchell argued that the symphony's accessibility was largely responsible for the post-war rise in Mahler's popularity.
