Katharina von Bora
Foreningshuset – Sønderborg Kaserne, Sønderborg
Theresia Treschow-Kühl steps into the role of Katharina von Bora and tells her story in the first person, wearing a reconstruction of the dress known from Lucas Cranach's 1526 portrait of her, created in collaboration with Annette Herbst, Historicum.
Sent to a convent at age five, Katharina von Bora's future seemed predetermined. In 1523, she fled the convent life at great risk and made her way to Wittenberg - and into a marriage with Martin Luther that caused a sensation at the time. She was not merely the wife of the reformer, but managed the household, agriculture, and finances with such skill that Luther called her "Herr Käte".
The lecture portrays an enterprising woman at the crossroads between medieval Europe and the new society of the Reformation, exploring faith, freedom, family, and women's circumstances in a time of transformation.
