It is Christmas Eve, and Clara receives a nutcracker doll as a gift from her godfather Drosselmeyer. She falls asleep, and the adventure begins: the Nutcracker comes to life and transforms into a prince.

Together they fight mischievous mice and journey to the Land of Plenty, where they meet dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and sweet delights from around the world.

The ballet with music by Tchaikovsky has been inseparably linked to Christmas since 1892. Here it is performed in a reduced version by the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra under conductor Nathan Brock, with dancers from the South Jutland Dance Academy and Ole Sørensen as narrator and Drosselmeyer.

About the venue: Koncertsalen Alsion

Koncertsalen Alsion in Sønderborg is the main concert hall for the whole of Southern Jutland, with seating for up to 988 guests. The programme ranges from classical music and opera to stand-up, comedy and lectures, with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester as a regular resident ensemble. The hall is constructed as two concrete shells, one inside the other, keeping outside noise at bay and giving it acoustics that performers consistently praise. The 20-metre-wide stage can be adjusted hydraulically to depths of 6, 9 or 12 metres.

One of Denmark's five regional orchestras, resident at Alsion in Sønderborg since 2007. Its 65 musicians cover all of Southern Jutland with around 150 concerts a year, and the orchestra maintains a long-standing cross-border partnership with the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester.

Christian Øland took on two chief conductor positions simultaneously from the 2025/26 season: Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and Generalmusikdirektor for Theater Magdeburg.
