About

Lê Quan Ninh is a French-Vietnamese percussionist and improviser, born in Paris on 29 December 1961. Classically trained - he took first prize in percussion at the Versailles Conservatory - he has worked since the early 1980s at the intersection of contemporary music and free improvisation, treating the body, found objects and silence as instruments in their own right. He co-founded the percussion quartet Quatuor Hêlios (1986-2012) and the ensemble ]h[iatus with cellist Martine Altenburger in 2006. His discography runs to around 40 releases on European and North American labels, and in 2010 he published the book *Improviser Librement*, an alphabetical meditation on the nature of improvisation.
