Themed Reading Circle - Banned Books

Book bans and censorship shape the world today - from the USA to Russia - with reasons ranging from sexual or violent content to criticism of those in power. As part of Danish PEN's campaign #ForbiddenBooks, which launches on 5 October, Sorø Library focuses on this phenomenon with a themed reading circle where all books on the programme have been banned in one or more countries.

The circle meets six Thursdays from 16:00 to 17:30 in the reading room. Registration is via email to roseg@soroe.dk.

The programme:
• From 5 October: 1st book distributed - George Orwell: 1984 (collected at the desk during staffed opening hours)
• 12 November: George Orwell - 1984
• 10 December: Narges Mohammadi - White Torture
• 14 January: Jelena Kostjutjenko - My Beloved Country
• 11 February: Celeste Ng - Our Missing Hearts
• 11 March: Ahmet Altan - I Will Never See the World Again
• 15 April: Han Kang - The Vegetarian

Titles may change if campaign interest makes it difficult to obtain the books.

In connection with the reading circle, two separate lectures will be held, both ticketed: Charlotte Engberg speaks about "Dangerous Books", and Dennis Meyhoff about "Book Bans Today - Russia and the USA". Dates and ticket information will be announced later.
