The History of Ankerhus and the Significance of Domestic Science Education · Sorø Bibliotek, Sorø

Ankerhus and domestic science education history: Thursday 28 January 2027, 18:30–20:15, Sorø Bibliotek, Sorø. Tickets cost 50–100 kr.

From the late 19th century, domestic science schools emerged across Denmark, shaping the lives of generations of women. In towns like Sorø, they left a clear mark on both business and local politics, and Ankerhus was one of the prominent institutions in this development.

Historian Annette Rasmussen explores an educational movement that opened new opportunities for women and helped shape modern Denmark. She also examines a part of Sorø's history that is often overlooked, even though Ankerhus and Sorø Domestic Science School were central to the town's identity for decades. Much of Ankerhus has since disappeared, and as the townscape changes, preserving this shared memory becomes all the more important.

The lecture offers insight into the significance of domestic science education for learning, community, and social development, and aims to keep an important part of Danish history alive.

Annette Rasmussen is a historian and researcher in educational history. Together with Karen Egedal Andreasen, she has written the article "The Significance of Domestic Science Education for the Small Town's Modernity", which examines the role of domestic science education in social development from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.

The lecture is arranged in collaboration between the Historical Society for West Zealand, Sorø Local History Archive, and Sorø Library.
