From the Grave to the Star over Bethlehem - Oratorios by J. S. Bach
Holmens Kirke, Copenhagen · 50–200 kr. · ≈ 7–27 €
Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen perform three of Bach's great oratorios with international vocal soloists at Holmens Church. The concert is arranged in collaboration with Festival Bach de Lausanne.
The thread running through the programme is Søren Kierkegaard's words that life must be understood backwards - but lived forwards. The programme therefore moves backwards through Jesus's life: from the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), where Mary Magdalene, Mary Jacobi, Peter and John arrive at the empty tomb, to the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11), where the disciples see Jesus leave earthly life, and finally to cantatas 5 and 6 from the Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) - two rarely performed cantatas in Denmark - which follow the wise men towards Bethlehem and the revelation of Epiphany.
Duration: 2.5 hours including interval.
Performers:
Joanne Lunn, Alex Potter, Daniel Johannsen, Stephan Macleod (vocal soloists)
Concerto Copenhagen
Lars Ulrik Mortensen, musical direction
